What the single status certificate is for
The single status certificate is issued based on information from the Civil Registry, which in Nicaragua operates under the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE). Its most frequent use is to prove marital status when an institution in the destination country requires it. The most common cases include:

- Choose a trusted person in Nicaragua (a relative or representative) who can visit the offices.
- Grant a power of attorney authorizing that person to handle the procedure and sign whatever is necessary on your behalf.
- Gather your personal documents (ID card and birth certificate) and send them as instructed.
- Your representative handles the municipal certificate, the notarial deed of single status, and the issuance before the Civil Registry.
- Process the apostille if you are going to use the document abroad (see below).
A power of attorney granted in the United States normally must be put in legal form to take effect in Nicaragua (for example, notarized and duly legalized or apostilled). Consult a notary and the Nicaraguan office on how it must be drafted to be accepted.
