Nicaragua marriage certificate from the United States

The marriage certificate is the document that proves a marriage was legally registered in Nicaragua. If you live in the United States and need to present it for an immigration, banking, or family matter, you don't always have to fly back to the country: you can request it through a representative and, when US authorities require it, have it apostilled. In this guide we explain who issues it, how to get it from abroad, and what to do if you got married outside Nicaragua.

What the marriage certificate is for

The marriage certificate officially proves the marital bond and is often requested in a wide range of situations: family petitions or status adjustments before US immigration, claiming pensions or insurance, joint banking matters, inheritances, or any process that requires proving married marital status.

Important: the marriage certificate certifies the union of the couple; don't confuse it with the birth certificate, which proves a person's birth, or with the death certificate. Each document is requested separately.

Who issues it in Nicaragua

The certification is handled by the Civil Registry of Persons (Registro del Estado Civil de las Personas), which in Nicaragua is part of the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE). The marriage is recorded in the registry of the municipality where it took place, so that is where you can request a certified copy of your certificate.

  • 🏛️ Issuer: Civil Registry of Persons (under the CSE).
  • 🌐 Official reference: cse.gob.ni
  • 📍 Where it is recorded: in the municipality where the marriage was registered.

How to get it from the US

While in the United States, you have two ways to obtain your Nicaraguan marriage certificate:

  1. In person if you travel to Nicaragua: you go to the Civil Registry of the relevant municipality and request the certified copy.
  2. Through a representative who lives in Nicaragua. To authorize them, you need to grant them a power of attorney; with it, that person carries out the process on your behalf and picks up the document.

The power of attorney is the key piece of the remote process: it defines who can act for you. If you need to grant one, first schedule your consular appointment using our guide on how to book an appointment and check the exact requirements before you go.

Registering a marriage held in the US

If you got married in the United States and want that marriage to have legal effect in Nicaragua, the process is the reverse: you must register it with the Nicaraguan Civil Registry. To do so, you are generally required to provide the US marriage certificate apostilled by the authority of the state where the marriage took place, along with its translation into Spanish.

  • 📄 Marriage certificate issued in the US.
  • 🔖 Apostille of the document by the authority of the corresponding state.
  • 🈯 Spanish translation of the certificate and the apostille.

Once registered in Nicaragua, you can request certified copies of the certificate like any other marriage recorded in the country. Confirm the specific requirements with the Civil Registry before starting the process, as they may vary depending on the case.

The apostille for using it in the United States

When the Nicaraguan marriage certificate must take effect before US authorities, the certified copy is usually not enough: you need the apostille, the seal that validates the document among the countries of the Hague Convention. In Nicaragua it is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancilleria).

  • 🔖 Who apostilles it: Nicaragua's Foreign Ministry.
  • 🌐 Official reference: cancilleria.gob.ni
  • 🈯 Possible translation: some US institutions ask for the document translated into English.

Order matters: first obtain the certified certificate and then process its apostille. Check with the US entity requesting it whether it also needs an English translation.

Frequently asked questions about the marriage certificate

Who issues the marriage certificate in Nicaragua?

It is issued by the Civil Registry of Persons, which falls under the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE). The marriage is recorded in the municipality where it took place, and that is where the certified copy is requested.

Can I request the certificate from the US without traveling?

Yes. You can appoint a representative in Nicaragua through a power of attorney to go to the Civil Registry and request the certification on your behalf. If you travel, you can also do it in person.

Is the Nicaraguan certificate valid as-is in the United States?

Usually not directly. To use it before US authorities, the apostille from Nicaragua's Foreign Ministry is generally required and, in many cases, a translation into English.

Where is the document apostilled?

At Nicaragua's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancilleria), through cancilleria.gob.ni. The apostille is the seal that validates the certificate among the countries of the Hague Convention.

I got married in the US, how do I register the marriage in Nicaragua?

You are usually asked for the US marriage certificate apostilled by the authority of the state where you married and translated into Spanish, to register it with the Nicaraguan Civil Registry.

Is a marriage certificate the same as a birth certificate?

No. Although both are issued by the Civil Registry, the marriage certificate certifies the marital union and the birth certificate proves the birth. They are requested separately.
